Levada on the job



ROME — Archbishop William Levada is settling in here as new prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Pope Benedict surprised many here and abroad when he tapped the California churchman for the sensitive post. The archbishop’s name failed to appear on many of the short lists proposed to succeed the pope in the congregation job. Besides, there are only a handful of Americans in top Vatican posts here, in spite of the internationalization of the Curia that began under the late Pope John Paul.
