Update on the Sisters of Bethany
Also on that page, by the way, is an unrelated photo with this caption: "Dancer carries the lectionary during opening prayer service of the Religious Education Congress, 2005. Photo by Sr. Nancy Munro, CSJ."
Anyway, the one item is a notice from Sister M. Anncarla Costello, S.N.D., the Archdiocese of L.A.'s Vicar for Women Religious, which fingers Sister Angela (of the Sisters of Bethany in Santa Barbara) by name and which introduces a letter from Mother Luz Elena Ordonez Quezada, C.V.D., superior general of the Sisters of Bethany. The Archdiocese posted Sister Anncarla's notice on Sept. 21, but the notice's internal evidence dates it at Sept. 14.
The other item is a Sept. 11 statement by the Archdiocese.
Mother Luz's letter is dated Sept. 13. She says her Order has decided to "return the house in Santa Barbara" [to the Archdiocese].
A commenter or two has said at this blogspot that Mother Luz's letter apologized for the behavior of the Sisters of Bethany in Santa Barbara. But that is not precisely what her letter says:
"In my name and from our congregation I express all our pain and hurt for the sad events, because we are church, daughters of the church, and anything that hurts or injures our Mother Church, injures all of us in general."
"I express all our pain and hurt" does not sound like a typical apology. And "for the sad events" is so general that it certainly can be read to encompass the whole situation, including the Archdiocese's (mis)handling of it.
Would the Archdiocese be nicer to the Sisters of Bethany in Santa Barbara if they were liturgical dancers, pastorettes or something equally trendy?
Let's pray for the Sisters of Bethany during this sad time.

Qunitero should go into PR--he has a phenomenal capacity to spin and twist facts to make them say anything he wants them to say. Kinda like JWs with the Bible.
Dear Hillary's Fat Legs,
All you are doing is name-calling, not refuting anything with facts or logic.
Boy those wascally JWs are sneaky. Assuming that JW's=Joos, [i.e. Jews.] Boy they sure are a clever lot. Especially the biggest Joo of all: J'shua Ha Meshiach. Why he managed to convince nearly 1 billion people that He's the Son of God. Imagine that!
mvh,
My guess is that Hillary's reference to JWs is to Jehovah's Witnesses, not Jews.
Anonymous,
Correct--I was referring to the Jehovah's Witnesses who make the Bible say what they want it to say.
Logic? Who is Quintero to lecture others on logic, when he can't even deduce that the awkward English in the mother general's letter is probably reflective of the fact that Spanish is her first language. Duh. Yeah, Hillary is right. Q is more interested in bashing and spinning against the Church than he is in determining the facts.
Dear Anonymous 7:56 a.m.,
Wow, now I'm "spinning against" the entire Church, not just Cardinal Mahony! You His-Eminence-defenders are getting desperate.
You are either mistaken or you are misrepresenting me on purpose.
Your charge is totally INCORRECT.
I legitimately speculated BEFORE THE LETTER WAS EVER AVAILABLE that, given the Cardinal's defenders' saying the sister should write such a letter and she then did just that, the Archdiocese's powers that be might have sent her a draft to sign.
Anyone who thinks things like that never happen is naive indeed.
AFTER Mother Luz's letter was made available, anyone could see it was in her own words -- and I QUOTED from it, which I would not have done had I thought it "cooked."
Her letter does NOT say what you Cardinal-defenders say it does, so YOU are the ones spinning things.
