Yes, this is the same Antonio Villaraigosa to whom Cardinal Mahony last summer turned over the Cathedral for an "interfaith service" ("coronation" is more like it) on the morning of his inauguration as mayor of Los Angeles - and whom the Cardinal then walked side by side with on a triumphal procession to the inauguration.
And yes, this is the same Antonio Villaraigosa who has been viciously pro-abortion at every stop in his career in politics. Brave Catholic students with "You Can't Be Catholic and Pro-Abortion" t-shirts followed the Cardinal and the mayor-elect last summer in the Cathedral and, with signs, on the procession to the inauguration. How could any Cardinal forsake those pro-life true hearts for a pro-abortion politico?
From Villaraigosa's remarks tonight, though, no one listening would have any idea that he is pro-abortion. He professed to be pro-family. He used the word "family" so often, you'd think it was the only word he knew. He expressed concern for children. And he ended by saying, "God bless America; God bless you all."
So here is the party of abortion giving a national forum to a pro-abortion nominally Catholic politician. They are obviously grooming him for future national office. They are obviously using him to deceive people into thinking that he and his party are pro-family and, by extension, pro-life -- when just the opposite is true.
So, Cardinal Mahony, you helped sow the seeds of all this last summer when you welcomed Villaraigosa in the Cathedral and you paraded with him in public. Has anyone ever seen you give similar blessing to any pro-life politician anywhere?
