A shrine to 'La Virgencita'
This article about a popular shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines reminded me of the fact that in L.A. there really aren't any "shrines" or places of pilgrimage.
If Mahony had been smart, instead of spending $200 million on a ugly building that nobody likes -- and nobody knows exactly how much the thing cost since Mahony is not prone to "full disclosure" about anything -- the Cardinal of L.A. would have used some of that money to build a shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe somewhere in his archdiocese (maybe out in the Lancaster-Palmdale area). This would have been a wise thing to do, both pastorally and even financially speaking. The largest concentration of Mexicans outside of Mexico City resides in Los Angeles. And besides, faithful Catholics of every stripe love Our Lady.

Mr. Quintero, the picture didn't come through. Help, please!
God bless you.
I hope that fixed it, Barbara. Thanks for visiting.
Archbishop Raymond Burke, before he left LaCrosse for St. Louis, initiated the building of a Shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. All you need do then is travel to Wisconsin!
It would have been a VERY good thing to do, to have such a pilgrimage site in LA. May Our Lord grant us a prelate who loves Him and His Holy Mother so that such a thing can happen in the future.
ave Maria!
A shrine here in LA could be very popular, since we have a relic (at the Cathedral).
You are absolutely correct. I have recently traveled to New York to the Shrine of the North American Martyrs and in the City of NY the Shrine of Mother Cabrini. If you find the Missions a source of spirituality and inspiration these two shrines in NY state will thrill you.
Indeed, sir ... shrines to the Blessed Mother are a wonderful thing, and LA sorely needs one.
As an aside, my paternal grandmother is buried here: http://www.czestochowa.us/home_us.php
I love our new cathedral in downtown LA, and I regularly make the pilgrimage to see Our Lady of Guadalupe at her shrine there:

Dear Brad,
Thank you for your comment of October 2009. I'm replying on Oct. 23, 2009.
I was talking about a shrine dedicated exclusively to Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. But it is good that people can visit a shrine for Her in the cathedral, and I'm glad you can visit there.
The commentary on the cathedral page that you cite leaves something to be desired. For one thing, it mentions lefties Zapata and Cesar Chavez as using Our Lady's image, but it leaves out the Cristeros' faithful use of the Image against the leftist enemies of the Church in the 1920's.
