Bounce 'em?

Public excommunication. not just quiet automatic excommunication, might be in store for politicians and scientists who kill people who are at the embryonic stage.

That is what it sounded as if Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo was saying this week.

Here is an excerpt from one report (click on this post's title): "Scientists who carry out embryonic stem cell research and politicians who pass laws permitting the practice will be excommunicated, the Vatican said yesterday. 'Destroying human embryos is equivalent to an abortion. It is the same thing,' said Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, head of the Pontifical Council for the Family. 'Excommunication will be applied to the women, doctors and researchers who eliminate embryos [and to the] politicians that approve the law,' he said in an interview with Famiglia Christiana, an official Vatican magazine."

Will Cardinal Mahony back him up? Will Cardinal McCarrick? Archbishop Wuerl?

Let us see if the rubber hits the road soon and some U.S. politicians get excommunicated before the November elections. That might be unlikely; but as they say in baseball, you never know.

You can count on the usual suspects to not be in line with what the Vatican says.

JOSEPH D'HIPPOLITO SAYS...

With all due respect, Cardinal Trujillo is grandstanding, just like about every other cardinal when discussing political issues. If Rome really took such rhetoric seriously, it would not only excommunicate publically those priests who molested children and teenagers but also the bishops who enabled them.
