Patroness of the United States of America
On this Fourth of July, and every day, we remember that Our Blessed Mother is Patroness of the United States of America, under her title, the Immaculate Conception.
Regina angelorum, ora pro nobis! (Queen of Angels, pray for us!)
Here, from Sister M. Therese, ed., I Sing of a Maiden: The Mary Book of Verse (The Macmillan Company, 1947), is a prayer-poem by Pope Leo XIII that we can certainly use today.
Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903)
WAR CRY: TO MARY
(Ardet pugna ferox; Lucifer ipse, videns)
When warfare blusters at high Lucifer's command,
And writhing monsters fume a course from Acheron's land,
With speed of wind and wing, O loving Mother haste!
Shield for the plagued of soul, sword for the heart laid waste!
Crush with thy virgin foot these cobras of the night,
Erect thy son a tower on the Mary-height
Where he may watch the serpents leave, as stars in flight.
