LAPD calls Cardinal Mahony
Today's (December 6) Los Angeles Times reports (click on this post's title) that LAPD detectives have talked on the phone with Cardinal Mahony in the aftermath of the public revelations about his saying in October that someone beat and kicked him outside the cathedral last July.
The cardinal still did not want to make the attack a police matter.
However, I hear tonight that there is concern now about how to keep the cathedral safe from the attacker, who, after all, is on the loose and who could still be lurking near the cathedral or could return to the vicinity at any time.

Perhaps the Cardinal will release his medical records relative to this incident.
I think it has been well established that Cardinal Mahony does not like reporting things to the police.
Maybe it's like a phobia or something?
Does he have somethign similar to the popemobile?

Dear Skeetor,
Thanks for writing about the new Popemobile!
http://media.daimler.com had this to say about it on Dec. 5:
"In future, Pope Benedict XVI will present himself to the 40,000 or so pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square in a shining white, open-top Mercedes-Benz G-Class during his public audiences on Wednesdays. The new "Popemobile" was created over a two-year development period in close consultation with the Vatican, and has now been personally handed over to the Holy Father.
"This open official car, which the Head of the Catholic Church requested for use during fine weather, was developed by Mercedes-Benz on the basis of the G 500. It is equipped with a folding windscreen and hand-rails, and like its predecessors it is painted in the Vaticanmystic white finish. The interior is likewise white, and is accessed via steps lined in red at the rear..."
Maybe it was the same aliens that beat up Bp. Pelotte in Gallup???
hopingforheaven? Not if you're making fun of a 71-year-old man who was beaten by some thug. The original news reports say he did not require medical attention. I don't recall ever reading about any of the threats he probably gets on a regular basis. So, Karen, nice cheap shot. Hope youre proud of it. For a very public person, he has no real security. You can approach him any Sunday at the cathedral. I'd say he's courageous.
Dear Anonymous 2:30 p.m.,
I'm sure everyone, including commenters HopingforHeaven and Karen, has prayed for Cardinal Mahony's safety. We must pray for him and all our bishops and clergy.
I think their comments were directed at unusual aspects of the case, namely, that the Cardinal did not report the severe attack to the police and did not tell his priests about the attack for around three months.
I saw a report that mentioned hospitalization, by the way.
Huh? They say those things and you say that they pray for him? Unlikely.
As for the report you saw, what did it mention as the source to back up the claim that he was hospitalized?
Dear Anonymous 11:20 a.m.,
ABC News reported on Dec. 5 that Fr. John Shea said the Cardinal had been hospitalized. The link (sorry it's not clickable here):
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=3956067
The report says: "[Fr.] Shea said Mahony was so badly beaten that the cardinal was hospitalized, and that it took him weeks to recover."
Also on Dec. 5, the Associated Press reported: "One priest says the 71-year-old Mahony was hospitalized and that it took weeks for him to recover."
Here is a link for that story: http://www.kold.com/Global/story.asp?S=7455813
Our local L.A. radio stations also reported a hospitalization.
