The Quotable Mahony

"It's very helpful to move forward, and we're all learning. There's nothing the church can do that's failsafe. You can't inaugurate something that's not going to have hiccups and pros and cons. We've got to be open to the Spirit, and I think the Spirit is leading us in the right direction."
I think I have a headache.

I don't need to drink tonight to have fun with my buddies, I could just read Cardinal Mahony's quotes all evening!

While I applaud the sudden interest in priestly vocations by Cardinal Mahony, I think the larger trend toward priestless parishes betrays a lack of the Christian virtue of hope, and a mistaken sense that lay people have to be "just like priests."

For more on this, see my post today about the idea of distinct vocations in the Church.
