Cause and effect

The February 24 and March 3 issues of The Tidings carry a two-part article by Jesuit Father Thomas Reese, "Clergy Sexual Abuse: Facts, Myths and Questions." It is two years old, having run in "America" magazine's issue of March 22, 2004.

Father Reese edited "America" for quite a while -- until last spring, when he resigned amid reports of Vatican pressure for his exit.

Father Reese cites some stats from reports by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People. He calls it a "myth" that "homosexuality caused the abuse crisis." But he cannot come close to showing that.

And unfortunately for Father Reese, "America" magazine and The Tidings, the facts say homosexuality IS a major cause of the scandals. Just for starters: The John Jay Report itself said 81 percent of clergy abuse victims were boys.

Click on this post's title to see "Child Molestation by Homosexuals and Heterosexuals," by Brian Clowes and David Sonnier, in the May 2005 issue of the Homiletic & Pastoral Review. Among the many stats they cite are that "73% of all homosexuals...preyed on adolescent or younger boys" and that, even though only 2% of men are homosexuals, "around 25-40% of men attracted to children prefer boys."

Don't expect The Tidings to reprint that article very soon.

Can you tell us who are the good or at least decent bishops out your way? The bishop of Oakand is said to be good; the Bishop Cordileone, auxiliary of San Diego seems good. Any others?

Are there any signs that the new archbishop of San Francisco or the new Bishop of Reno are any better than they seemed? Or worse?

BLIND OBEDIENCE OR HOLY OBEDIENCE?

As I was praying my St. Michael's Chaplet tonight, and when I came
to the Principalities and Obedience, some thoughts came to me.

Some seem to believe that Holy Obedience means blind obedience even
to sinners who are members of the Hierarchy and are encouraging us
to sin!

If one knows the history of the Church's Saints, nothing could be
further from the truth.

Take St. Athanasius the Great, Patriarch of Alexandria in the 4th
Century, he is the Saint that most successfully opposed the Arian
heresy and he suffered much for it. The Pope at that time was
Liberius, and this Pope, after succumbing to the Arians, actually
excommunicated this great Saint. This Pope is probably the only
early Pontiff not to be entered into the Book of Martyrology and
you now know the story of St. Athanasius the great, Doctor of the
Church who by the way is one of our Patrons.

Another case is that of St. John Fisher Bishop of Rochester. This
Bishop refused to obey then Archbishop Cranmer who had ordered all
priests to condone the marriage of Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn, never
mind that Anne Boleyn is widely reported to have been Henry's
daughter from one his early flings! For his disobedience, Bishop
Fisher was imprisoned and martyred. During his imprisonment,
Bishop Fisher was elevated by the Pope to the College of Cardinals,
and this infuriated the sex crazed Henry. Needless to say that
this good faithful Bishop's disobedience to his so called superior
was rewarded by God when the Bishop, now Cardinal, was raised to
the Altar.

The point I am attempting to make is that God does not require
blind obedience, but Holy Obedience, and sometimes Holy Obedience
means obedience to God first and foremost. If this were not the
case, Athanasius, Patriarch of Alexandria, would not now be St.
Anthanasius the Great, Doctor of the Church.

Your comments and even rebuttals are encouraged on this subject.

God bless, yours in Their Hearts,

Jeff,

As far as we can tell, there are no really good Bishops in California, all have compromised. All or most, got their positions because they were close to the Pope of the United States, Roger Cardinal Mahony!

Sorry for the bad, very bad news, but "the truth shall set you free".

The closest good Bishop is His Excellency Bishop Robert Vasa of the Diocese of Baker, OR.

Bishop Cordileone may just be the one exception!

To Q: Please take care.

Your blog seems to have been taken over by someone who really is pushing you in a very different direction (as you know, I really used to enjoy reading your blog).

So to Kenneth Fisher: Re Pope Liberius and Athanasius:

and

http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/
1994/9409fea2.asp

regarding the treatment of Athanasius by Pope Liberius:

"[he] had been made to sign questionable statements of faith while under duress."

Now that sheds a whole new light on the matter.

And another thing, I was very impressed with Bishop Vigneron's interventions at the USCCB meeting in November.

Oakland is still in CA I believe.

Dear Venerable Aussie and Dear Anonymous,

No one's pushing. Lately I have felt like focusing on the right to life a little more. As we all know, there are lots and lots of issues in ole LA, and that one deserves lots of our attention.

April 1st is April Fools Day, and it is the day that “Concerned Roman Catholics of America, Inc.” will be picketing the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress (I prefer to call it the “Anti-Catholic Religious Education Congress!”.

We will be conducting our prayerful protest demonstration in front of the two main Exhibit Hall entrances from 9:00 AM until roughly 6:00 PM.

We are now in the process of preparing poster signs for this, and very much would appreciate suggestions as to what the themes of these posters should be.

Please email me at: crcoa@dslextreme.com or call me at: 714-491-2284 with any ideas on this you may have.

Remember there are just 12 days left until the annual invasion of the hetereodox, the Archdiocese of Lost Angels Religious Anti-Catholic Education Congress at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Will you be there to prayerfully demonstrate against this attack on our Faith?

God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher, Founder & Chairman
