Cardinal Mahony ought to denounce the anti-Catholics

Have you visited http://catholicleague.org lately, the home of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights?

Right now, this pro-Catholic watchdog group is defending our Church from the pro-abortion Democrat John Edwards and his presidential campaign. You have probably heard about how he is refusing to fire two of his campaign staffers who each have a history of writing blasphemous and obscene, gutter-level anti-Catholic and anti-pro-life screeds on their blogspots.

Sure would be nice if Cardinal Mahony would defend our Church by denouncing this terrible instance of anti-Catholicism and by demanding that Edwards fire his staff bigots.

And each of us should pray in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the sins of blasphemy that these and all anti-Catholics, atheists, etc., commit.

Dear "Hoodlum,"

They were not simply "opposing the Catholic agenda," they were acting as bigots and expressing hatred. Such bigotry degrades America's civic life and public discourse. It also has led to anti-Catholic violence, such as arson against Catholic churches.

And "views" stop being "personal" once their holders are campaign staffers of presidential hopefuls.

The whole issue is moot now. They felt the heat and got out of the kitchen (paraphrase of Harry S. Truman).

Dear Anoymous 10:52 a.m.,

Yes, the two blasphemer-bigot-staffers have resigned.

But the matter is not over. Edwards has not bowed out of the race or even apologized, for his acceptance of anti-Catholicism.

We need to remember that Edwards knew all about his staffers' blasphemy and bigotry and refused to fire them.

Edwards thumbed his nose at us Catholics and pro-lifers. That is not acceptable behavior by any presidential candidate.

There is no "Catholic agenda."
