Archbishop Ranjith is at it again, urging bishops to start obeying the Pope
You'll recall that on Oct. 6, Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, said that bishops who put obstacles in the way of implementing Pope Benedict XVI's motu proprio on the Latin Mass are "instruments of the devil."
Now, in an interview with the Papal web site Petrus, Archbishop Ranjith has slammed the recalcitrant bishops again and spoken of "an episcopal rebellion" going on. Catholic World News reports (click on this post's title):
"Archbishop Ranjith complained that in some dioceses, bishops and their representatives have set out policies 'inexplicably' limiting the scope of the Pope's motu proprio. He charged that the resistance to the Pope's policy has been driven by 'on the one hand, ideological prejudices, and on the other hand pride -- one of the deadliest sins.'"
It would seem likely that the Archbishop is making these statements with the permission of the Pope, and even at his request. What do you think?

The Archbishop has been very vocal lately in support of the Holy Father. I'm sure he has Papa Bene's full confidence. I'm also sure he's not out freelancing, especially as he talks about obedience. There are probably more than a few bishops huddled in conference rooms trying to figure out their next steps. Let's hope we see more bishops go public in their support of the Pope and in support of Church teaching.
Paul in Long Beach
Just now noticing 40 years of episcopal and clerical disobedience??
Dear Paul,
Yes, let's hope they do start publicly supporting the Pope and the Magisterium.
It's a bizarre situation, isn't it, when we have to be hoping bishops will start acting Catholic?
Dear Anonymous 12:14 p.m.,
Let's hope the Vatican starts doing something now about the disobedient ones.
The French, German, American and English bishops have acquitted themselves of their responsibilities as pastors with great integrity in their reception of the Motu Proprio and have taken very generously into account the demands of the small minority who with to celebrate the traditional Tridentine Mass. For their pains they are lambasted by bloggers worldwide, who want more uncritical alacrity and less concern with pastoral priorities and basic common sense. In addition the bishops are described as "instruments of the devil" by Archbishop Ranjith, whom the insidious schismatic bishop Bernard Fellay sees as his man in Rome (Fellay also told his followers that Cardinal Arinze was "a traitor"). It is unheard of for a Vatican official to pour scorn on Cardinals and bishops in this way, and I do not think that the Pope can afford to entertain his antics much longer. It is amazing to see schismatics calling on the world's bishops to be more obedient to the Pope! And the bad ecclesiology that regards the universal episcopate as mere pawns and errand-boys is perfectly incompatible with Vatican II.
Shall we pray for the bishops
Dear Anonymous 7:32 p.m.,
Thank you for your comments and for taking the time to write.
I think many Catholics would say that more than a "small minority" want the Latin Mass now. In any case, "liberal" Catholics have done all they could for 40 years to reduce demand for Latin Mass.
It also cannot be denied that some US bishops have issued statements essentially saying they are going to determine when the Latin Mass will be offered in their dioceses.
These bishops have also predicted that there will be little demand. That is not "very generous."
These things do not sound as if they are in spirit with the Pope.
It is the Vicar of Christ who left the saying of the Latin Mass up to individual priests, and to pastors at the request of the faithful.
When you say, "And the bad ecclesiology that regards the universal episcopate as mere pawns and errand-boys is perfectly incompatible with Vatican II," do you mean that the faithful have no right to ask the hierarchy to obey the Pope? Shouldn't a bishop strive to be a "pawn" of the Pope?
Canon Law and the counsel of saints through the ages both allow for the faithful to legitimately petition and even to admonish their superiors; that is not treating the hierarchy as "mere pawns and errand-boys."
Some people seem to think the bishops are infallible but the Vicar of Christ is not. I hope you are not one of them.
Some people also seem to think that "conservative" laity have no rights in the Church at all. I hope you are not one of them.
UNDER NO LESS THAT 3 POPES AND FOR FORTY YEARS LIBERAL REVISIONISTS HAVE BEEN APPOINTED AND STACK THE DECK, AND THIS HAVE BEEN GOING ON SINCE THE CLOSE OF THE "COUNCIL" VATICAN 2. THE GOOD NEWS (BESIDES THE GOSPELS) IS THAT THE MAJORITY OF DISOBEDIENT LIBERAL BISHOPS, PRIESTS & CARDINALS ARE AGING RAPIDLY AND MILLIONS OF YOUNG PRIESTS WANT AND ARE ORTHODOX AND LITERALLY MILLIONS OF CATHOLICS WORLDWIDE ARE TIRED AND ANGRY AT THEIR BISHOPS DISPLAYS OF DISRESPECT FOR AND OPEN DISOBEDIENCE TO POPE BENEDICT 16TH AND THE MOTU PROPRIO SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM IN PARTICULAR. THANKS TO THE HOLY GHOST MORE AND MORE ORTHODOX BISHOPS & CARDINALS ARE COMING ON SITE AND FEWER AND FEWER HETERODOX BISHOPS REMAIN, ALTHOUGH THEIR REACTIONARY 40 YRS OF DRACONIAN RULE WILL NOT BE ERASED OVER NIGHT, AT LEAST AT THE PARISH LEVEL. WHEN THOUSANDS OF ORTHODOX FORMER ANGLICAN PRIESTS ENTER THE CATHOLIC CHURCH AND THE 500+ PRIESTS AND FOUR BISHOPS OF THE SOCIETY OF ST. PIUS 10TH RECONCILE THEN YOU WILL SEE MAJOR CHANGES IN THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH AND THE BEGINNING OF THE REFORM OF THE REFORM WILL BEGIN IN ERNEST.
