Nunez kicks sand in Cardinal Mahony's face
Fabian Nunez is the pro-abortion Democrat politician who is speaker of the California Assembly.
He is from our 46th Assembly District here in Los Angeles.
And he is kicking sand in our California bishops' faces.
He is doing that by being one of the three introducers of AB 374, a suicide-by-doctor ("physician-assisted suicide" is the anti-lifers' euphemism/propaganda term for it) bill. He is lending this bill the prestige and clout that he has as Speaker.
According to today's Los Angeles Times (click on this post's title), Nunez says he is "ready to buck my Church" over the pro-death bill.
Nunez also says he is going to phone Cardinal Mahony today. But he adds, "I think the toughest conversation I'm going to have is with my Catholic mother, who wanted me to be a priest."
Don't look now, but that smart-aleck statement constitutes kicking sand in His Eminence's face.
Will the Cardinal surprise Nunez and give him a tougher conversation than his mother will? We can always dream. But has he ever resisted a Democrat politician?
Time for tough love, Cardinal Mahony; tell Nunez you are bouncing him from the Church until he repents of this heinous crime of pushing the culture of death against the most defenseless members of your flock and all our society.
You are the shepherd, your Eminence, after all, and this is your responsibility. By the way: If Nunez was sincere, he would have phoned you before signing on to the bill, of course.
Two-bit pipsqueak politicians such as Fabian Nunez should not be able to defy Almighty God and His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, especially so brazenly and with impunity.

With catechesis so poor and a de facto avoidance of controversial topics by homilists in most archdiocesan parishes, it's possible (though not probable) that Mr. Nunez has no clue as the the "why" of Church teaching. I do hope the Cardinal takes this opportunity to speak the truth plainly directly to Mr. Nunez (versus relying on a statement from the state's bishop's conference. I would think that bulletin announcements and pryaers at Mass are not too much to ask for. Hopefully, more than just a few of us will write letters to te bills sponsors.
Oh, and I do hope Mother Nunez kicks a little butt.

If you actually think that Mahony is going to oppose any part of the Democratic party platform, then you're living in dream world.
If only Mahony had a boss that adhered to the Catholic faith, then that person (call them, for example, a Pope) could call him to task!
Alas - no such person exists...
ahhh hoodlump
more insights...
by your logic if someone killed YOU they'd just be fulfilling God's plan too, right?
The vigor with which you pursue this mission you're on is sad to watch dude- and of course it receives not that violent response you've been trolling for since you got here but rather concern and all our best hopes and prayers for that God-given grace which alone can provide you the peace of mind you're so obviously longing for.
Rev. 3:20
No Dave, according to bible, Psalm 139, thats god's plan. However, I ceased to subscribe to that nonsense.
Dear Hoodlum,
Suicide-by-doctor "assisted suicide" has the potential to affect everyone, not least by greasing the skids to when euthanasia is pervasive.
God is the All-Good Creator and Redeemer, so He has rights over each of us. We only hurt ourselves when we fight Him.
Dear Friend,
I've deleted one comment because I judged to be intemperate one particular part of its langauge against a certain member of the hierarchy.
I try not to delete comments, but seriously negative name-calling is out of bounds in most blogspots, including this one.
Dear Paul in Long Beach,
I couldn't agree with you more about the possibility that because of poor catechesis and other formation, Nunez might not know they why of Catholic morality.
And yes, wouldn't it be wonderful if Fabian's mom would take him to the woodshed.
Dear Anonymous 10:55 p.m.,
The Pope does adhere to the Catholic Faith. It is not proof to the contrary of that if the Pope does not call a particular Cardinal to task.
In the eyes of Nunez and politicians of his ilk, this can be justified as a late late late term abortion. God help us.
Keep up the good work Quintero. I appreciate your work in keeping all of us informed on issues that are ignored by other media.
Dear Arturo,
That is a great characterization --suicide-by-doctor is a "late late late term abortion."
Thank you very much for your kind words. If you see a news item you think deserves coverage, please let me know!
Dear Paul in Long Beach,
You are so right that just a statement from the California bishops' conference is not enough of a response on this issue. (or any such issue.)
The bishops should order pastors to implement bulletin and lector announcements, prayers at Mass, homilies, literature tables outside Masses, and public rallies.
Wesley Smith had an excellent post on this bill over at First Things:

Hmmm, Catholic nursing homes will be legally required to permit assisted suicide on their premises...Don't think that Nunez didn't know of the effect on Catholic nursing homes. He notes that the Oregon law (that this purports to mimic) did NOT have that coercive element.
So once again, it's the Catholic politicians that do the most to thwart Catholic teaching.
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, but what did Cardinal Mahony say publicly about this?
