Rumor: Coadjutor bishop coming as successor to Cdl. Mahony

On January 21, "American Papist" blogger Thomas Peters wrote the following (click on this post's title):

"I am hearing, on reliable authority, that the Cardinal Archbishop of Los Angeles, Roger Mahony, has approved a coadjutor bishop recently selected for him by the Holy See. This news – and the name – will be publicly announced 'soon.'

"This new bishop, once announced and appointed, will automatically succeed Mahony as the Archbishop of Los Angeles as soon as Mahony retires, presumably before Mahony’s mandatory retirement at age 75 (February 27, 2011). Mahony has said that the current class of seminarians will be the last one he personally ordains..."

Thomas Peters quotes archdiocesan spokesman Tod Tamberg as calling the rumor "speculation" -- but that is not a denial.

Thanks to today's (January 25) online New Oxford Review Daily Feed for reporting about this.

Interesting to see that the Cardinal "approved" the coadjutor...that does give one pause. I pray the Holy Father has made a bold pick.

Let us all pray for the intersession of St. Thomas Becket with all our might. That Our Lord may grace the Archdiocese of Los Angeles with a true shepherd. One whose specialty is being a minister of the Word and a true Alter Cristus. Not a replacement who has some self imposed expertise that makes "state" matters more important than serving the Lord in His Church.

The story of the transformation of Thomas Becket is awesome. Becket went from King Henry II's drinking buddy and wenching partner, to defender of the Faith. It's truly amazing that the conflict between Henry II and Becket turned out to be the forerunner of an even more famous church/state battle that involved two other people with the same first names: Henry VIII and Thomas Moore.

Dear Paul in Long Beach,

Thanks for writing and for being a longtime friend of this blogspot!

Let's hope the Holy Father didn't give Cardinal Mahony any option other than to approve the pick.

Dear Tuleesh,

Thank you for writing and for being a friend of this blogspot!

You're so right about the need for each of us to continue praying for a wonderful successor.

Thank you for relaying the story of St. Thomas Becket and England's Henry II.

And thank you also for pointing out that St. Thomas More and England's Henry VIII had the same names -- something that should occur to everyone but which I've never noticed before!

Dear Joe of St. Therese,

Thank you for your good comment. You're so right that each of us must pray for Cardinal Mahony and his successor.

Thank you for naming several priests and some bishops you'd like to see as our new Archbishop. I'd publish your comment, except I don't want to embarrass these humble men of God.

Thanks again for writing, and God bless!
